Life in this small town is slow and easy, peaceful and safe. People smile and greet one another on the street even if they don't know each other's names. Young and old walk or ride bicycles because Goldendale is flat and traffic moves slowly. Many residents have lived all their lives in Klickitat County and belong to pioneer families. As in many Northwest towns, people tend to stay in the area they were born in. Goldendale's stores, doctor's offices, library, auto repair shops, Senior Center, etc. are within a few minutes drive of each other. Many people get by without cars at all. Families in Goldendale are involved in activities like high school athletic events and other school activities. Other activities include baseball leagues, 4-H, Junior Rodeo, and preparations for Community Days and the county fair in summertime. Bowling, golf, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, water sports, snow skiing, snow boarding, and snow mobiling are also favorites. Housing in and around Goldendale ranges from low-income subsidized apartments in town to large ranches outside of town. Houses and mobile homes on town lots and acreage in the country are priced considerably less than comparable homes in metropolitan areas. Parcels from five acres up are abundant and inexpensive outside town. Property taxes are very reasonable throughout the county. A middle-income retirement apartment complex is being developed, and several apartments for independent living are next to the nursing home for people who need some nursing assistance. There are mobile home parks within the city and numerous residential blocks allow mobiles to be located on them. Most Goldendale residents live in individual homes or mobiles with yards and gardens and fine old trees: maple, cottonwood, spruce, horse chestnut, pine, willow, locust and walnut. Goldendale is home to about 3,500 residents. It is 1621 feet above sea level with annual precipitation about 16 inches with little rain between May and September. |
